How can we bring ideas for one-planet living into our communities?
One Planet BC supports communities across British Columbia, Canada as they strive towards “one planet living” – a vision for happier, healthier lives for everyone within the limits of our one planet.
The program supports individuals, businesses and organisations – as well as local governments – in applying the 10 One Planet Principles, which include health and happiness, sustainable food, zero waste and zero-carbon energy. These 10 simple principles provide a common language to talk about sustainability and to drive change, and are used around the world as part of the One Planet Living Framework developed by Bioregional UK.
OneEarth Living leads a One Planet BC project on Vancouver Island engaging 17 businesses, schools and community groups in the District of Saanich to develop, implement and evaluate action plans shaped by the 10 principles. The plans identify high-impact priority actions based on carbon and ecological footprint metrics and an app developed by the BCIT Centre for Ecocities. For example, by starting from the numbers Reynolds School was able to prioritize reducing textiles waste through a clothing swap.
One Planet Saanich is part of Bioregional’s One Planet Cities program, which includes Denmark (Elsinore), South Africa (Durban), Tarusa (Russia) and the UK (Oxfordshire) – all aiming to make our cities better places to live.
