How can we use our imagination to create the futures we want?

Disruptive Imaginings is a global campaign and initiative to create positive and compelling visions and experiences of life in sustainable futures. This project is about moving beyond negative stories about the future and creating attractive visions of sustainable futures – in particular sustainable lifestyles. Future scenarios help us think and plan in more innovative, rigorous and adaptive ways. We can go beyond gathering information (“what we know”) and expand our understanding of options (“what is possible or imaginable”).

OneEarth Living created and facilitated Disruptive Imaginings with partners. Through dialogue sessions, the initiative has explored new ways to engage citizens on key issues of our time, including by leveraging storytelling, experiential design, and the arts to solve complex challenges with social innovation. “Memes” – ranging from films and photographs, to guides and policies, to metaphors and speeches, to green buildings and community gardens – can inspire one or many people, transforming their relationships with their community, resources, and the things they consume or produce.

Disruptive Imaginings has supported a variety of workshops, public presentations and interactive events exploring how we can use our imagination to create the futures we want. Conversations also led to a paper on the contribution of art and culture to urban resilience and livability. These activities have involved diverse stakeholders working in the areas of sustainable business, community sustainability, and arts and social change.
